Winter Activities Offered by the Arctic Chalet
- Experience dogsledding at its best! You can learn to drive one of our five dog teams on our scenic trails for an hour of fun and excitement. You can also travel on other trails doing short trips out from the Chalet daily. This is considered to be the most fun activity in our area and a "must experience" for kids from 10 to 74. Younger children can ride with their parents. Dogsledding has never been this good!
- We can also drive you up the frozen Mackenzie River in one of our 4X4 vehicles on the longest ice road in the world to Tuktoyaktuk, an Inuvialuit village on the Arctic Ocean. There you can see the real barren lands and the unique Pingos for which Tuk is famous. Learn about the traditional life styles of the native people who have existed in this harsh environment for hundreds of years.
- Drive the remote wilderness Dempster highway to the Arctic Circle Crossing and into the Yukon Territories. The journey takes you through the Mackenzie Delta past two native settlements and up into the Richardson Mountains where you can take in the breathtaking views in the high country and feel the great expanse of the northern landscapes. In the mountains one can occasionally see the caribou passing through on their journey north to their breeding grounds along the coastal plains. Sometimes you can view foxes, wolves and porcupine as well as the beautiful white ptarmigan and black ravens that follow the caribou kills.
- For an afternoon and evening excursion, travel by snow mobile to a very secluded cabin nestled in some lovely hills situated on a cliff above a tranquil lake where you can relax by the wood stoves, do some hiking on snow shoes and enjoy a good meal before returning to the Chalet. Overnight stays can be arranged.
- A variety of guided snow mobile tours are available. Choose between
a short 1 or 2- hour tour or a day trip through the Mackenzie Delta or out
of the tree line and up into barren Tundra Land.
- At the Arctic Chalet you can experience the thrill of viewing the Aurora on clear nights away from the city lights of Inuvik. Enjoy the warmth of a camp fire out on an open lake behind the cabins where you can lie out on musk ox hides to watch the northern lights dancing in the sky; an unforgettable experience!
